We here at OwnYourPhone have a lot of experience with competing with 800-pound gorillas. If you’re a musician, you experience this every day. The big labels make you do all the hard work, and control the channels for distribution and promotion so they get all the reward.
Well, we’re here to help. Starting now, OwnYourPhone is letting all users mark their music as “Public.” If you own the copyright to a song, you can make your ringtone available to all of your fans. You can even put a copy of it on your blog or MySpace…just like signed bands do.
The whole interface is pretty slick, and it is totally free to share your tones. As it should be.
We still charge 1 credit for all downloads. However, we give away 1 free credit for each new account, so 99 percent of your fans and friends can get your band’s ringtone for free! Everybody wins.
The program is still in beta, so excuse the ghosts that are sure to haunt us from time to time. Once the program reaches critical mass, we plan to allow bands to donate proceeds from their ringtones to charity. Stay tuned. –>
